Background: The Anglican Dean of Johannesburg, the Very Revered Gonville French-Beytagh, went on trial in Pretoria today (Monday), changed with plotting to overthrow the Government of South Africa by violence. The 59-year-old Dean's trial is expected to take about one month - as the Supreme Court goes through the 38-page indictment in which the allegation orange from a ten-year active participation in African terrorist activities to the advocation of the murder of a Major in the Security Police; and from offering to arrange sabotage training to the encouragement of revolution at a Church conference.
On the day before the trial opened (Sunday, August 1), the Dean celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of Johannesburg - as he has done every Sunday while awaiting trial - with a multi-racial congregation. His lesson appropriately referred to the story of Herod and his persecution of members of the Church. After the Service, the Dean was wished good luck by members of his Congregation.
