  • Description

August 6, Herr Jonas, Mayor of Vienna, delivered an oration at the funeral of 17 people killed when a runaway tram crashed into another, Aug. 3. Seventeen coffins lay side by side in Vienna's main cemetery, with next-of-kin sitting opposite. An 18th funeral takes place Aug 9.

The tram was built in 1913, and use of such old vehicles was strongly criticised in Viennese papers, although emergency brakes had been fitted since the end of World War Two. Now a new note of tragedy has been introduced into the fatality: a newspaper headline proclaimed "Tram driver totally drunk", and tests indicate that Johann Trummler, man in question, and a victim of the collision, had drunk almost 3 pints of wine before going on duty.
