  • Description

Jamaicans voted in a general election on Tuesday (29 February), putting the former opposition People's National Party -- led by Mr. Michael Manley -- into power, and ending a ten-year reign of the Jamaica Labour Party.

The new Prime Minister, who now follows in his father's footsteps as leader of the People's National Party and Prime Minister, was confident of his victory even before polling began. Mr. Manley had been conducting an intense campaign to try and stop the Labour Party creating Jamaican political history by gaining a third consecutive term in office.

Mr. Maley was counting on the work done by his party over the last three years to attract the votes.
