  • Description

On the pavement outside Rockefeller's Chicago headquarters, July 27th, the Governor of New York and his "might-have-been" opponent, Vice President Nixon, had their first face-to-face meeting since Rockefeller gave his endorsement July 26th to Nixon as Presidential candidate.

Rockefeller tossed an arm around Nixon's shoulder and confidently told a crowd gathered around them: "He's going to win with New York State in the Fall." It was the first time he had predicted Nixon could carry the Empire State.

Recalling last Friday's middle of the night meeting in New York, which through an agreement on the party platform between Rockefeller and Nixon, a reporter remarked to the Vice President that "It seems you are always coming to visit the Governor."
"Wait a minute, now," Rockefeller objected. "We are sticking together."
Standing a bit later before the New York delegates, the Governor gave the Vice President a glowing introduction and a renewed pledge of support.

"Your presence here with us," he said, "is to he a final inspiration and emotional lift which I know will result in your victory and election in November. We are with your all the way....Everyone of us is at your service to campaign everywhere and all-out.

Nixon acknowledged that New York, with the biggest electoral vote in the nation, is a key state. He told the New Yorkers: "I would like to ask you to loan your Governor to us. We want him to speak throughout the country."
Nixon later said, in jest, "I will come to New York and campaign for or against you - whichever will do you the most good."
