  • Description

Security measures in Beirut have been stepped up following a fresh outbreak of fighting between rival politician groups, on Wednesday (4 June).

Many main streets are now closed and police and army road blocks surround the city centre. All incoming cars are being searched.

Security forces put a stop to heavy pre-dawn exchanges of rocket, mortar and machine-gun fire between the suburbs of Chiah and Ain Rummaneh, but sporadic firing went on throughout the day.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister-designate, Rashid Karami claims to have made progress in his efforts to find an acceptable formula for a new Government to take Lebanon out of its political crisis.

Mr. Karami made this statement after a five and-half hour meeting with President Suleiman Franjieh, but would give no indication as to when the new Government was likely to be formed.

His major problem is to reconcile the parliamentary and armed Forces' pressure of the right-wing falangists with left-wing demands for their exclusion from Government as punishment for their role in the Beirut fighting in April.
