  • Description

As delegates from many countries gathered in Cairo on Sunday (9 January) prior to Monday's opening of the 5th Afro-Asian Peoples' Solidarity Organisation Conference a dispute arose over the recognition of a Bangladesh delegation from Dacca. The Pakistan delegation was eventually to boycott proceedings on the opening day in protest at the presence of the Bangladesh group. They had been admitted only as unnamed observers. On arrival in Cairo many delegations paid their respects at the tomb of the late President Nasser.

SYNOPSIS: In Cairo the tomb of the late President Nasser was visited on Sunday by delegates from many countries gathering for the 5th Afro-Asian Peoples' Solidarity Organisation Conference scheduled to begin the following day.

Many delegates visited the tomb to pay their respects to Egypt's former leader...among them a Bangladesh group led by Mr Mulla Jaladin Ahmed. The presence of this group was later to spark off a dispute over its recognition.

At the Arab Socialist Union building, also on Sunday, delegates gathered for pre-Conference discussion....and to thrash out the admissibility of the Bangladesh group.

African, Pakistani, Indian, and Soviet delegates were among those present.

After deliberation it was decided to recognise the Bangladesh group as observers, but without referring to them by any specific name. However, on Monday, the Pakistan delegation boycotted the Conference opening.
