Background: A team of Russians are attempting to be the first men to get to the North Pole on skis. The Pole was first conquered by the American explorer Robert E. Peary after several attempts in 1909 using dog-sledges. The Italian Umberto Nobile mounted his ill-fated expedition in 1928 with airship and motor-sledge. The Russian I.I. Cherevichny flew to the Pole three times during the Second World War. In 1958 the American nuclear submarine Nautilus sailed under the ice cap. Two years ago the Soviet ice breaker Arktika was the first ship to get there. Now the Russians look set to reach the Pole on skis.

SYNOPSIS: The Artic landscape - thousand of miles of freezing ice and snow where the temperature sometimes drops below minus-forty degrees centigrade.

The team is made up of seven young physicists, engineers, and mathematicians who've taken part in ski-ing expeditions in the Soviet Union. They set off six weeks ago and have already covered six-hundred-and-fifty kilometres, much further than a previously attempt.

The men stop to pitch camp, take a rest and carry out medical tests. They are also making geographical and technical studies for research institutions which are involved in the project.

The team are in round-the-clock contact with a weather station. They have spent the last few years designing the equipment which allows them to survive the sub-zero temperatures.

Much of the information gained will be used to help others who have to face extreme cold - rescue teams and hunters fro example. It looks like the men's careful preparations to reach their goal will be successful.
