  • Description

The United States' Defence Secretary, Mr Harold Brown, Sunday (24th July) visited several US military and air bases in South Korea near the Demilitarised zone which divides South Korea from the North.

Mr Brown was on the second day of a visit to South Korea during which he is having talks with South Korean officials about the planned withdrawal from the country of 33,000 US ground troops over the next five years.

Secretary Brown also conferred with senor US military officers who are reported to have told him that South Korea would be unable to resist a North Korean attack without the US ground troops, unless "substantial amounts" of American equipment were provided over the years of withdrawal.

According to reports, Secretary Brown was told by the US commanders that the South Koreans would need more American anti-tank weapons, artillery, and modern tanks. In Washington, the Administration of President Carter was said yesterday (24th July) by a senior defence official, to be planning to ask Congress for two billion dollars' worth of military aid and credits for the South Korean Administration of President Park Chung Hee. But the official said that the Carter Administration might have difficulty in persuading Congress to make the grant because of allegations of Korean influence-peddling in Washington, and because many American Congressmen are critical of president Park for alleged human rights violations.

Secretary Brown leaves South Korea Tuesday for Japan where he will stay for two days for talks with the Japanese Government.
