  • Description

IN ADEN, ELECTIONS TO THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL WENT OFF QUIETLY ON FRIDAY. TROUBLE HAD BEEN EXPECTED BY THE BRITISH AUTHORITIES, BUT PATROLS OF SOLDIERS AND POLICEMEN ENSURED THAT THE DAY'S POLLING WAS CARRIED OUT WITHOUT INCIDENT.

NEARLY 6,000 OUT OF 8,000 VOTERS EXERCISED THEIR RIGHT TO POLL: THE REMAINDER OF THE STATE'S POPULATION IS NOT QUALIFIED TO VOTE. AS EXPECTED, KHALIFA ABDULLA HASSAN KHALIFA, HELD IN ADEN PRISON UNDER THE EMERGENCY POWERS ACT, TOPPED THE POLL. IT IS BELIEVED NOW THAT HE WILL BE RELEASED FROM JAIL.

THE RETURNING OFFICER IN EACH CONSTITUENCY ENSURED THAT EACH VOTER HAD HIS FINGER DIPPED IN DYE TO GUARANTEE NO DUPLICATION. THE RESULTS WERE THEN ANNOUNCED SHORTLY AFTER THE END OF POLLING. FILM SHOWS THE VOTING AND ELECTED MEMBERS FOR CRATER SOUTH. HERS THE OUTGOING CHIEF MINISTER MR. ZAIN ABOO BAHAROON CAME FIRST: ABDUL MACKAWI, SECOND: SALEM BASSENDWAH, THIRD.
