    The Army and units of the para-military Philippine Constabulary are guarding vital bridges and roads in the region in an attempt to seal off jungle hideouts used by the rebels.

    An army spokesman told newsmen visiting the region this week that more than 200 rebels, civilians and security personnel had been killed in the past two weeks. The violence has forced large numbers of refugees of flock to the safety of more populated areas.

    In one incident on Monday (12 March), more than 100 Muslims fought a three-hour gun-battle with police. Two rebels were killed and five captured.
