Background: The star of the 35th Paris International Air Show, landed safely at Le Bourget airport after a short flight from Germany. The United States space shuttle Enterprise perched on the back of a specially modified Boeing 747, is becoming a familiar sight in Europe, although the French government has decided that, if Parisians want to see the huge reusable space-craft, they will have to come to the airshow. Permission to fly over Paris was refused. Apart from the United States, other countries are also well represented. Britain has several missiles on display, including the Rapier, which saw service in the Falkland Islands. At the other end of the scale, there is the massive Belfast transport plane. For the hosts, the pride of French aerospace industry is the Ariane rocket which the European Space Agency hopes will eventually become a serious rival of the US space-shuttle. The Soviet Union, however, will not be participating in this year's Paris Airshow and it is rumoured that this could be a reprisal against the expulsion of 47 Soviet diplomats last month. They will miss some of the more unusual offerings like the British made Optica aircraft.
