  • Description

Machine guns and small arms were used by Panamanian students recently in their battle against the police when they demonstrated against the Government's alleged failure to improve school facilities during the present dry-season holiday.

Six deaths have been reported so far and about 24 people have been wounded. Barrioades, improvised from overturned dustbins and the like, have been used to prevent the police moving about the streets. Tear-gas was used to clear the students from their defences, but when they climbed on the roofs of buildings and sniped at the police the latter were forced to withdraw.

A state of siege has been declared by the government and the US authorities have sealed off the Canal Zone from the rest of the country.

On the second day of the riots, May 22nd, several victims of the disturbances were carried through the streets of Panama City, proceeded by students carrying the country's flag. At a local church, surrounded by several thousand students, the coffins were placed before the altar for a lying-in-state.
