  • Description

ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATORS THREATEN WASHINGTON WITH A NEW WAVE OF DISRUPTIVE DEMONSTRATIONS ON MONDAY. BUT YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IT WAS THE TURN OF THE HAWKS. EIGHTY PEOPLE MARCHED TO THE CAPITOL TO DEMONSTRATE AGAINST WITHDRAWAL FROM VIETNAM. MEANWHILE, MILITARY POLICE WERE BEING ASSEMBLED TO JOIN THE SECURITY FORCES WHO WILL TRY TO KEEP ORDER DURING MONDAY'S CHAMPAIGN OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE LISTENING TO A ROCK CONCERT. AND AT SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, PRESIDENT NIXON WAS COMMENTING ON THEIR PLANS FOR MONDAY:
TODAY BEGAN WITH A DIFFERENT KIND OF DEMONSTRATION. EIGHTY-FOUR PEOPLE MARCHED ON THE CAPITOL SAYING THEY WERE AGAINST APPEASEMENT AND SURRENDER TO COMMUNISM IN VIETNAM AND EVINCED DOUBTS IN CONGRESS. MANY CARRIED UMBRELLAS TO SYMBOLISE FORMER BRITISH PRIME MINISTER NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN, WHO, SOME HISTORIANS SAY, APPEASED HITLER BEFORE WORLD WAR TWO.

ACROSS THE POTOMAC RIVER, AT FORT MEYER, VIRGINIA, ARMY MILITARY POLICEMEN BEGAN ASSEMBLING AS PART OF 7,300 NATIONAL GUARDSMEN AND POLICE WHO ILL BE ON DUTY NEXT WEEK TO HANDLE ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATORS. THE PENTAGON ANNOUNCED THAT UP TO 10,000 TROOPS, INCLUDING PARATROOPERS AND MARINES ARE BEING PUT ON ALERT IN CASE OF SERIOUS TROUBLE.

THERE WAS LITTLE THOUGHT OF THE MILITARY, LITTLE THOUGHT OF THE WAR AT THE PROTESTERS' CAMP SITE WHICH WAS NOT FAR FROM THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TURNED OUT FOR A ROCK CONCERT. SOME ARE JUST SIGHT-SEERS OR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LIKE ROCK MUSIC, SO IT'S DIFFICULT TO SAY HOW MANY OF THEM WILL BE BLOCKING BRIDGES, TYING UP TRAFFIC OR MARCHING ON THE PENTAGON WHEN THE FIRST BIG DEMONSTRATION COMES ON MONDAY.

THE PRESIDENT WAS ASKED ABOUT THE ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATIONS UNDERWAY IN WASHINGTON:
