  • Description

THE BODY OF FRENCH COMMUNIST ELDER STATESMAN, MAURICE THOREZ WAS TONIGHT, (SUNDAY), FLOWN TO PARIS FROM THE BULGARIAN PORT OF VARNA, ABOARD A SOVIET AIRLINER.

SIXTY-FOUR YEAR OLD MAURICE THOREZ DIED OF A HEART ATTACK YESTERDAY WHILE TRAVELLING TO THE SOVIET UNION FOR A HOLIDAY ON THE RUSSIAN LINER LITVA. HE WAS BEING ACCOMPANIED ON THE TRIP BY HIS WIFE JEANETTE VERMEERSCH, WHO FLEW BACK TO PARIS WITH HER LATE HUSBAND'S BODY.

    M. THOREZ HAD BEEN IN POOR HEALTH SINCE A STROKE IN 1950, AND IN MAY THIS YEAR HE GAVE UP THE POST OF PARTY SECRETARY-GENERAL, A POST WHICH HE HAD HELD FOR 34 YEARS. IN RECOGNITION OF HIS SERVICES TO THE PARTY, HE WAS ELECTED TO THE "ELDER STATESMAN'S" POST OF PRESIDENT.

THE SON OF A MINOR, HE LEFT SCHOOL AT THE AGE OF 12 TO ENTER THE MINES AND DURING HIS TEENS DEVELOPED AN INTEREST IN POLITICS. AT THE AGE OF 23 HE BECAME REGIONAL SECRETARY OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY IN THE PAS DE CALAIS, AND IN 1930 BECAME SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY.

IN PRE-WAR DAYS HE WAS CONTINUALLY ACTIVE ON THE POLITICAL FRONT, AND LED THE COMMUNIST PARTY INTO THE POPULAR FRONT ALLIANCE WITH LEON BLUM'S SOCIALISTS AND DALADIER'S RADICALS.

AT THE OUTBREAK OF WORLD WAR TWO, THOREZ WAS CALLED UP, BUT DESERTED AND FLED TO RUSSIA WHERE HE REMAINED UNTIL THE LIBERATION OF PARIS IN 1944. ON HIS RETURN HE WAS GIVEN AN AMNESTY HAD HIS CIVIL RIGHTS RETURNED AND ENDED UP BY BECOMING MINISTER OF STATE IN PRESIDENT'S DE GAULLE'S FIRST POST-WAR ADMINISTRATION.

    M. THOREZ REMAINED AS MINISTER OF STATE IN THE GOVERNMENTS OF GOUIN, BIDAULT, AND RAMADIER. IN 1950, HIS LEADERSHIP OF THE PARTY FELL INTO ABEYANCE WHEN HE SUFFERED A STROKE. HE WENT TO RUSSIA FOR TREATMENT AND WHEN HE RETURNED TO FRANCE WAS NOTICED TO BE PARTLY PARALYSED. THE AFFLICTION REDUCED HIS CONSIDERABLE POWERS OF ORATORY AND SERIOUSLY IMPAIRED HIS HEALTH.

ABOUT 3 THOUSAND PEOPLE WERE AT THE PARIS AIRPORT TO SEE M. THOREZ'S BODY RETURNED TO FRANCE - AMONG THEM HIS TWO SONS, PAUL AND JEAN.

THE ZINC CASKET, DRAPPED WITH A FRENCH TRICOLOR, WAS TAKEN TO THE PARIS WORKING CLASS SUBURB OF IVRY, WHICH M. THOREZ REPRESENTED IN THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES FOR MANY YEARS - AND FOR WHICH AREA HE ONCE ACTED AS MAYOR.
