    China and England won the opening matches of the Uber Cup badminton competition held in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, on May 7. England defeated Canada 4-1, and China thrashed Indonesia 5-0. In the doubles, Xu Rong and Wu Jianqui, of China, beat Indonesia's Rosina Tendesan and Imelda Kumiawan 8-15, 15-4, 15-11. In another doubles' match, China defeated Indonesia 15-3, 15-8. The Uber Cup is the Ladies' Team World Championship. In the Thomas Cup, the men's Team World Championship, Malaysia and Denmark were winners in the opening matches on the same day. Malaysia defeated Japan 5-0, and Denmark beat Sweden 4-1. Eight countries are taking part in both championships, which are due to end on May 19. The eight teams play in groups of four. The winning team of each group plays the runner up of the other group in the semi-finalists play each other to decide the winner and runner up. The countries involved are China -- current Thomas Cup holders, Denmark, Sweden, Korea, England, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan, current holders of the Uber Cup.
