  • Description

Tokyo, Nov 21: Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda's Liberal-Democratic Party wona a sweeping victory in the general election of Nov 20. The party gained 296 seats, - 13 more than they had before.

The Socialist Party also made striking gains, winning 23 seats more than the 122 seats they had when the Diet was dissolved.

The new Democratic Socialist Party, which had 40 seats before dissolution, appeared to be threatened with eclipse. The party won only 17 seats, less than half the number they had before.

The Communist party, which had only 1 seat before the Diet dissolution, won 3 seats. Mr. Ikeda's Liberal Democrats won their victory in spite of the party's recent unpopularity over the new American security pact.
