    SIXTY VETERAN CARS - ALL BUILT BEFORE 1917 - HAVE BEEN DRIVING SEDATELY THROUGH WEST GERMANY THIS WEEK. TODAY (WEDNESDAY) THEY REACHED ESSLINGEN, ABOUT HALFWAY ON THEIR WEEK-LONG RALLY FROM PARIS TO VIENNA.

    THE VEHICLES INCLUDE A RENAULT, NOW THE PROPERTY OF THE FRENCH STATE-OWNED RENAULT COMPANY, WHICH WON A RACE OVER THE 1,365 KILOMETRES BETWEEN PARIS AND VIENNA 63 YEARS AGO.

    ORGANISERS OF THE RALLY HAVE STRESSED THAT IT'S IN NO WAY A RACE BUT A TEST OF ENDURANCE AND RELIABILITY. THE CARS MUST AVERAGE BETWEEN 20 AND 45 KILOMETRES AN HOUR, DEPENDING ON THEIR AGE AND SIZE.

    NINE COUNTRIES ARE IN THE RALLY: FRANCE, BELGIUM, ITALY, SWITZERLAND, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, BRITAIN, WEST GERMANY, HOLLAND AND SPAIN.

    THERE ARE EIGHT STAGES WITH OVERNIGHT STOPS AT REIMS, NANCY, BADEN-BADEN, STUTTGART, MUNICH, SALZBURG, AND LINZ.

    THE FIRST ARRIVAL IS DUE IN VIENNA AT 1615 LOCAL TIME ON MAY 15.
