Background: Malta presents a quiet contrast to the disturbed scene of only a few days ago. People are once again going about their peaceful pursuits. In the main the police and the barricades have gone.

One exception is the building of the Times of Malta which is still blocked by buses and under police guard.

At the docks it is once again life as usual - loading and unloading of vessels of all kinds goes ahead unhindered.

The burned-out jeep lying near Pawla is one of the few remaining witnesses to the bitterness and strife of the riot gangs and followers of Mintoff.

Bus transport is plying from the city to the outlying villages unhampered and back to schedule. Police once more confine themselves to traffic control and normal street patrol.

Children, like children everywhere, take to the swings and the playgrounds with all the fun and innocence of childhood. And for one being, anyway, the rod and line down in the harbour is the way to relax - and, maybe, forget the events of the last weeks, the unhappy days in Malta.
