Background: The battle for the Men's Swaythling Cup and the Women's Corbillion Cup reached the crucial around stage at the 33rd World Table Tennis Championships in Calcutta, India, on Sunday (9 February).

Strong teams from China won their way through to the final stages of both competitions in their bid to gain the world titles that ??? them at the last championships, A decisive win by Liang Ko Liang over Japanese rival Abe Katsuyuki, and victory by the women's doubles team of Hu Yun Lan and Ke Hain over the Japanese pair Yokota Sachiko and Ohzaki Yukie, helped the chinese team on the road to championship honours.

Also through to the final stages of the man's competition were Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, Sweden's plans in Monday's final was ensured by Kjell Johansson's win over the U.S.S.R.'s Stanislav Gomozkov. But the Swedish hopes of retaining the title won at the last championships looked poor in face of china's unbeaten record in the matches in Calcutta.

In the women's competition, the finalists facing China ware cup-holders South Korea, Japan and Hungary, The Chinese girls managed to win every match they played.

In the finals on Monday, the Swaythling Cup was won by China and the honour was matched by the Chinese women's victory in the Corbillion Cup.
