  • Description

Arab League Secretary General Chedli Klibi on Wednesday (5 December) discussed a wide range of subjects concerning the Middle East with French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing. The visit was part of an Arab diplomatic offensive to win support for a Palestinian state.

SYNOPSIS: The Secretary General of the Arab League, Mr Chedli Klibi, held the talks with French President Giscard D'Estaing at the Elysee Palace. It was the first visit to Western Europe by an Arab League Secretary-General. According to Mr. Klibi, the Arab League member states consider their current relationship with the European Economic Community to be generally satisfactory. But Mr. Klibi's visit is part of an effort to encourage greater understanding between the two groups.

Emerging from his talks Mr Klibi said he and the French President had discussed specific ways of strengthening, enlarging and deepening relations between the Aran League states and France.

Mr Klibi said he had explained to Monsieur Giscard that the Arabs expect France to adopt an absolutely clear stand on the Palestinian People's right to a homeland and a state. He said he expected this because of what he called France's major role in international affairs and in the European Common Market. The Palestinian issue was also recently taken up in the United Nations.

Last week (29 November) the U.N. marked International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People by holding a number of meetings to discuss and publicise the circumstances of the Palestinians.

The Arab League held their tenth summit in Tunis in November. It was the first since President Sadat signed Egypt's peace treaty with Israel last March, and the meeting ended with a formal declaration renewing the Arab states' pledges to the Palestinian cause and their condemnation of the Camp David accord.
