  • Description

In the Khmer Republic, heavy fighting has continued along Highway Four, which links the capital, Phnom Penh, with the country's only deep-water port, Kompong Som.

Khmer Rougs insurgents have been trying to cut the Highway, concentrating their attacks along stretches of the road near the provincial town of Kompong Spieu, about 300 miles (48 kms) southeast of Phnom Penh.

On Wednesday (December 19), Government forces, using infantry and armour, pushed the insurgents back from the road in a pre-dawn operation. They killed twenty insurgents. The bodies were left lined along the road.

The front lines are on the outskirts of Tratang Kaleoung, further down the Highway, where Khmer Rouge insurgents have been digging up a section of the road to prevent the Government armour from advancing.

The Government troops, most of them from the 28th Brigade, use mortars to knock out Communist positions before the amour-supported infantry move in. They use machine guns to pinpoint the communist positions along the hillsides near the Highway.

The Communists have been attacking the Highway as close as 12 miles (19.3 kms) to Phnom Penh. Intelligence officers have been trying to estimate the size of the communist force lining the road.
