Background: PHIL HILL, OF AMERICA, THE PRESENT WORLD MOTOR RACING CHAMPION, DRIVING A THREE-LITRE WORKS FERRARI - NO.92 - WITH OLIVIER GENDEBIEN OF BELGIUM, WON THE 1,000-KILOMETRE SPORTS CAR RACE ON THE NUERBURGRING CIRCUIT IN WEST GERMANY ON MAY 27. OVER THE 621-MILE CIRCUIT, THEY AVERAGED 82.4 MILES AN HOUR.

A FERRARI ALSO CAME IN SECOND WITH MIKE PARKES OF BRITAIN AND BELGIAN WILLY MAIRESSE - NO.93 - AVERAGING 82 MILES AN HOUR. A PROTOTYPE EIGHTY-CYLINDER PORSCHE - NO.111 - DRIVEN BY GRAHAM HILL OF BRITAIN AND HANS HERRMANN OF GERMANY WAS THIRD.

THE CROWD OF 250,000 SPECTATORS STOOD AROUND THE 14 1/4 MILE CIRCUIT AS THE BRITISH NATIONAL ANTHEM WAS PLAYED AT THE END OF THE RACE IN HONOUR OF THE BRITISH PLACE WINNERS.

TWO BRITISH COMPETITORS JIM CLARK AND TREVOR TAYLOR IN A TWO-LITRE LOTUS, NO.84, DREW THE APPLAUSE OF THE CROWD WHEN THEY TOOK THE LEAD AT THE START OF THE RACE FROM THE FIELD OF 67 CARS, AND HELD IT FOR 12 LAPS. THEN CLARK SPUN OFF THE ROAD, AND ALTHOUGH HE WAS NOT INJURED, HE WAS FORCED TO RETIRE. WILLY MAIRESSE TOOK OVER THE LEAD BUT SOON GAVE WAY TO PHIL HILL.

CONDITIONS FOR THE RACE WERE NOT GOOD. RAIN AT THE START CAUSED FREQUENT PIT STOPS, AND ABOUT HALF THE FIELD HAD TO WITHDRAW.
