  • Description

Demonstrators paraded through the streets of the port of Marseilles in southern France on Saturday (22 March) to protest at the death of an Algerian worker who had died the day before of gunshot wounds in the head.

The Algerian, Mohammed Laid Moussa, was shot by a masked gunman on Tuesday after receiving a three-year jail sentence, with 18 months suspended, for stabbing to death a neighbour who refused to turn down his record player.

    M. Moussa -- released immediately after serving 18 months in pre-trial detention -- was planning to return to Algeria because his lawyer had received a letter threatening to kill his client.

Two days after the shooting an anti-Arab group in Marseilles claimed responsibility for the act.
