  • Description

THE IONOCRAFT, A HEAVIER THAN AIR FLYING MACHINE WHICH DERIVES ITS POWER FROM ELECTRIFIED ATOMS, WAS DEMONSTRATED BY ITS INVENTOR, MAJ. ALEXANDER P. DE SEVERSKY, THIS WEEK.

ONE REPORTER DESCRIBED IT AS A "SORT OF ELECTRONIC FLYING CARPET" WHEN HE FIRST SAW THE INVENTION WHICH IS CAPABLE OF VERTICAL TAKE OFF, HOVERING, AND MOVING HORIZONTALLY IN ANY DIRECTION AT HIGH SPEED. TEST IN AN ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBER SHOW THAT WHEN THE DEVICE IS FULLY DEVELOPED IT WILL BE ABLE TO FLY AT 60 MILES (96 KILOMETRES) ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

THE IMMEDIATE APPLICATION OF THE IONOCRAFT IS PRIMARILY IN THE FIELD OF ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS AND DEFENCE WARNING SYSTEM.

THE CRAFT SUSTAINS ITSELF OF A DOWNDRAFT OF AIR CREATED BY HIGH-VOLTAGE DISCHARGE. ELECTRODES ON AN UPPER LEVEL OF THE FRAMEWORK IONIZE (CHARGE) AIR, WHICH IS ATTRACTED TO "COLLECTION" ELECTRODES BELOW. AS THE LOWER FRAMEWORK IS OPEN THE AIR PASSES THROUGH.

THE IONOCRAFT IS EXPECTED TO CARRY ITS OWN POWER PLANT OR TO RECEIVE MICROWAVE ENERGY THROUGH THE AIR FROM THE GROUND. LASER AND MASER BEAMS, THE INVENTORS SAYS, CAN BE USED FOR THE SAME PURPOSE. CONVERTERS WITH NO MOVING PARTS, HE ADDS, CAN TRANSFORM SUCH ENERGY, RECEIVED AS HEAT, INTO HIGH VOLTAGE.

THE IONOCRAFT COULD BE USED FOR DIRECT TELEVISION AND RADIO TRANSMISSION ACROSS THE UNITED STATES BY PLACING ONE 700 MILES (1,126 KILOMETRES) WEST OF NEW YORK, AND ANOTHER 700 MILES EAST OF LOS ANGELES, ACCORDING TO THE INVENTOR. SIMILARLY ONE OVER GREENLAND AND ANOTHER OVER ICELAND WOULD PROVIDE A LINK WITH EUROPE.

IT MIGHT ALSO BE USED AS A MISSILE INTERCEPTOR. GIVEN 15 MINUTES WARNING IT COULD BE MOVED INTO A COLLISION COURSE AT 60 MILES AND HOUR.
