  • Description

Philippines Opposition leader, Benigno Aquino, again refused to, recognise a military court when it began a third attempt on Tuesday (3 August) to try him on charges of murder, subversion and illegal possession of arms.

SYNOPSIS: The trial is being held in Manila, four years after Mr. Aquino was detained. He rejected similar tribunals in 1973 and again last year. This time he said the four-man military commission could not be impartial because the officers owed allegiance to President Ferdinand Narcos as their commander-in-chief. The court, whose right to try civilians was recently upheld by the Supreme Court, rejected Mr. Aquino's challenge.

He then made a speech condemning President Marcos' rule and the imposition of martial law. Before his arrest Mr. Aquinos was a likely presidential contender but now, if he's convicted he could face a firing squad. The court has entered pleas of not guilty to the six charges and adjourned to a date to be decided to hear the evidence.
