  • Description

THE DUTCH SHIP "ALCOR" CALLED IN AT MOMBASA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PICK UP 10 MORE WILD ANIMALS ON THEIR WAY TO GERMAN ZOOS. THE SHIP WAS ALREADY CARRYING OVER 60 ANIMALS TO WINTER IN TUNISIA BEFORE CONTINUING THEIR JOURNEY TO EUROPE.

THE ANIMALS WAITING TO EMBARK AT MOMBASA WERE FOUR RHINOS, TWO BUFFALO AND A WILDEBEEST, ALL CAUGHT IN KENYA BY THE SAME GAME TRAPPER. MOST OF THE ANIMALS ABOARD, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF WATERBUCK AND A BABY ELEPHANT, WERE CAUGHT IN ZAMBIA OVER SEVERAL MONTHS.

FRAU HILDEGARD LOCKAU, WIFE OF ONE OF THE GERMAN TRAPPERS, IS HELPING TO CARE FOR SOME OF THE BABY ANIMALS ON THE JOURNEY.

THE ANIMALS WERE CAUGHT FOR MESSRS. L. RUHE, THE ORGANISATION WHICH RUNS TWO OF GERMANY'S LARGEST ZOOS. THEY HAVE A HOLDING STATION IN TUNISIA WHERE ANIMALS SPEND THE WINTER, GOING TO GERMANY IN ABOUT APRIL. BEFORE THE HOLDING STATION WAS BUILT EAST AFRICAN TRAPPERS WERE HANDICAPPED BY TRYING TO CATCH ANIMALS FROM APRIL ONWARDS SO THAT THEY COULD BE TRANSPORTED TO EUROPE BEFORE THE ONSET OF WINTER.
