  • Description

Every year on the first full moon in November the Buddhists of Asia celebrate the festival of light.

The festival is a solemn, deeply religious occasion and has been celebrated now for nearly two thousand years.

It commemorates the day the Buddha was enlightened ... and every Buddhist is found to participate.

Day begins with a parade through the streets ... about five hundred thousand people took part in a procession in Rangoon November 2 ... and in the whole of Burma close to fifteen million. It ends in the grounds of the Temple of Buddha. There, alms are distributed to Saffron robed monks and to old people.

Then the crowd files into the Temple and each person lights a candle and places it before the altar.

At night they again light candles and place them around the shrines. This is done as a mark of respect to the wisdom of Buddha.
