  • Description

IRELAND, PLAYING WITH GREAT SPIRIT AND SPEED, BROUGHT OFF AN UNEXPECTED WIN OVER AUSTRALIA IN THE RUGBY INTERNATIONAL PLAYED AT DUBLIN TODAY (SATURDAY) BY 15 POINTS TO EIGHT. IRELAND, WHO LED 9-3 AT HALF-TIME, BUSTLED THE AUSTRALIANS OUT OF THEIR STRIDE AND MIKE GIBSON, THE IRISH STAND-OFF HALF, PLAYED SUPERBLY TO INITIATE HIS TEAM'S TRIUMPH.

GIBSON DROPPED TWO GOALS AND SCORED A TRY. IRELAND'S OTHER TRY CAME FROM WING THREE-QUARTER ALAN DUGGAN AND FULL-BACK TOM KIERNAN KICKED A PENALTY GOAL.

PHIL HAWTHORNE, THE AUSTRALIAN STAND-OFF HALF, DROPPED A GOAL AND WING THREE-QUARTER STEWART BOYCE OBTAINED A TRY WHICH FULL-BACK JIM LENEHAM CONVERTED TO COMPLETE AUSTRALIA'S SCORE.

A CROWD OF 40,000 WENT WILD WITH THE IMMEDIATE IRISH DOMINATION. AFTER 12 MINUTES IRELAND GAINED A QUICK HEEL BENEATH AUSTRALIA'S POSTS, AND GIBSON, DECLINING THE OPPORTUNITY OF A DROP GOAL, KICKED TO THE CORNER OVER THE ADVANCING AUSTRALIANS. DUGGAN SWOOPED INTO SCORE, BUT KIERNAN FAILED TO CONVERT.

12 MINUTES LATER GIBSON DROPPED A GOAL AS THE CLIMAX TO A WELL SUSTAINED ATTACK. AUSTRALIA WEE IN THE FURTHER TROUBLE ON THE 30 MINUTE MARK WHEN KIERNAN LANDED A 30 YARD PENALTY.

HAWTHORNE, WHO HAD MISSED A PENALTY AFTER 26 MINUTES, NOW MADE A GREAT RUN TO THE IRISH POSTS. OUT OF THE SCRUM, A FEW YARDS FROM THE LINE, CAME CATCHPOLE'S FLUENT PASS, AND HAWTHORNE DROPPED THE GOAL. IT WAS HAWTHORNE'S FIFTH IN INTERNATIONALS ON THIS TOUR.

THERE WAS NO SCORE IN THE REMAINING SIX MINUTES TO THE INTERVAL AND THE HALF-TIME SCORE WAS IRELAND: 9 POINTS AUSTRALIA: 3 POINTS.

AUSTRALIA HAD THE WIND AS WELL TO CONTEND WITH IN THE SECOND HALF. AN OBSTRUCTION GAVE AUSTRALIA A PENALTY KICK AFTER 46 MINUTES, BUT HAWTHORNE'S KICK WENT WIDE. KIERNAN ALSO MISSED A PENALTY CHANGE A FEW MINUTES LATER.

AFTER 66 MINUTES IRELAND SCORED AGAIN. GIBSON, THE MAN AUSTRALIA FEARED SO MUCH, CUT THROUGH THE FIELD TO PICK UP AND SCORE. THE TRY WASN'T CONVERTED.

AUSTRALIA STRUCK BACK WHEN STEWART BOYCE, SCORED A MAGNIFICENT TRY IN THE CORNER FOR AUSTRALIA WHICH JIM LENEHAN CONVERTED. BUT ANY HOPES OF A LATE REVIVAL WERE DESTROYED WHEN GIBSON DROPPED HIS SECOND GOAL FROM 40 YARDS OUT.
