  • Description

Twentyone passengers were killed, 60 injured, many seriously, when a steam train was in collision with an electric train, Retiro, Argentine, November 8.

The electric had just left Retiro when it was halted by signals. The steam train, bound for Pergamino, in Buenos Aires Province, rounded a bend and failed to see the stationary electric train in time to stop.

Rescue workers, firemen and police from neighbouring towns rushed to the spot. Rescue work went on as trapped passengers screamed in agony. The work was hindered by mud and a constant rainfall.

According to eyewitnesses many casualties were caused by electrocution after the crash - a large area had become charged.

The steam train driver, Humberto Vergara, was arrested by the police - but he insisted that the signalling system was to blame.
