  • Description

SPAIN AND MOROCCO THIS WEEK SIGNED A TREATY HANDING OVER THE TINY ENCLAVE OF IFNI TO MOROCCO. THE TREATY ENDS 109 YEARS OF SPANISH RULE.

THE MOROCCAN FOREIGN MINISTER, DR. AHMED LARAKI AND THE SPANISH AMBASSADOR TO MOROCCO, SENOR EDUARDO IBANEZ, SIGNED THE TREATY, WHICH ALSO COVERS AN AGREEMENT ON FINISHING RIGHTS IN WATERS AROUND IFNI.

IFNI, A TERRITORY OF 370,000 ACRES (149,000 HECTARES) WAS FOUNDED IN 1476 BY FISHERMEN FROM THE CANARY ISLANDS. THE TERRITORY WAS OVER-RUN BY MOROCCANS IN 1524 BUT WAS CEDED TO SPAIN IN 1860, ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT EFFECTIVELY OCCUPIED BY THE SPANISH UNTIL 1934.

IN 1957, AN ATTACK ION THE ENCLAVE BY MOROCCAN IRREGULATS NEARLY CAUSED WAR BETWEEN SPAIN AND MOROCCO, BUT THE GUERRILLAS WERE BEATEN OFF BY SPANISH FORCES.
