  • Description

On his general tour of the United States, Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Mikoyan dropped in at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood, Jan 12, to meet screen stars and managers including comedian Jerry Lewis, Italian beauty Sophia Loren and studio executive Frank Freeman.

Dressed in the uniform of an American naval officer, Jerry Lewis received the Soviet visitor in the sets for the film "Don't give up the Ship" and involved him in slapstick tomfoolery. Mr. Mikoyan stood through the act with remarkable equaninimity. Said Lewis: "What a marvellous 'straight man' Mikoyan is".

Accompanied by his 29-year-old son Sergo and Soviet ambassador Menchikov, the Deputy Premier called on such film celebrities as Marlon Brando, Clark Gable, Bob Hope - and Sophia Loren whose hand he shook with great delight.

Explaining methods of directing and acting to Mr.Mikoyan, Paramount vice-president Frank Freeman said: "Do join us and teach me how to make good pictures." To which the Russian guest modestly replied: "I'm just an amateur - but I would like to make a cowboyski film one of these days".

The following day, Jan 13, Mikoyan headed for New York.
