  • Description

President Omar Bongo of Gabon talked with French President Giscard d'Estaing over lunch at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Monday (13 June).

President Bongo told reporters he and President Giscard d'Estaing spoke about the energy crisis, the last Organisation of African Unity meeting and international questions -- but mainly about Franco-Gabonese affairs.

France agreed last year to finance the Trans-Gabonese railway to a maximum amount of 140,000 Francs (12,500,000 pounds sterling) in loans or grants. The World Bank had earlier questioned the economic wisdom of such a project at the moment.

Gabon also recently agreed to continue its membership of the Franc Zone and its defence agreement with France under which a small contingent of French troops is stationed in Gabon.

France's new Cooperation Minister M. Pierre Abelin attended the lunch with the Gabonese delegation.
