  • Description

IN THE IRISH REPUBLIC, THE PORT OF DUBLIN SUFFERED ITS WORST FIRE LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY). AT ONE TIME, IT LOOKED AS THOUGH PART OF IT WOULD BE BLOWN UP WHEN THE FIRE THREATENED A BIG LOAD OF EXPLOSIVES ABOARD A RAILWAY WAGON.

THE WAGON WAS IN A GOOD-SHED WHEN THE FLAMES ROARED THROUGH IT FOR 300 FEET (100 METRES). FIRE-FIGHTERS ONLY JUST MANAGED TO HAUL IT AWAY WHEN THE ROOF COLLAPSED. THE FIRE RAGED TWO HOURS BEFORE IT WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL.

EVERY CITY FIRE ENGINE WAS CALLED TO THE BLAZE. APART FROM THE RISK OF THE EXPLOSIVES GOING HIGH, THERE WAS ANOTHER FEARFUL MOMENT WHEN THREE-HUNDRED CATTLE IN A NEARBY YARD BELLOWED WITH TERROR AS SPARKS FELL ON TO THEIR FODDER. THEY WERE ON THE VERGE OF STAMPEDING AND WERE ROUNDED UP AND LED AWAY JUST IN TIME.

THE FIRE ENGULFED THREE TRAINS, DESTROYING NEARLY FORTY COACHES. DAMAGE WAS PUT AT ABOUT HALF-A-MILLION POUNDS STERLING. NO ONE WAS INJURED.
