  • Description

The Commonwealth's Sanction-Against Rhodesia committee met in London on Monday (19 June) to decide what further actions should be taken against Rhodesia, following the Pearce commission's report that Africans have vetoed the Smith-Douglas Home solution.

The committee, composed of London-based High Commissioners of 31 Commonwealth governments, is expected to study ways to block existing loopholes and the intensify the sanctions campaign.

Mr. Arnold Smith, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, recently urged all nations to "crack down" on firms and organisations trading with Rhodesia.

The United States Congress decision to permit imports of chrome from Rhodesia is likely to be one of the issues discussed at the meeting.

The sanctions group is expected to recommend their governments back demands in the United Nations for action by the Security Council, which is being asked to consider additional measures to make sanctions more effective.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, disclosed recently that Rhodesia had managed to build up its exports to 97 per cent of what they were before sanctions were imposed in 1965.
