    The Soviet Prime Minister, Mr Alexei Kosygin, arrived in Ottawa on Sunday (October 17) at the start of an eight-day Canadian visit. He was accompanied by his daughter, and they were met at the airport by Canadian Prime Minister Mr Pierre Trudeau and his wife. following his arrival -- covered in this film -- Mr Kosygin was later the target for several demonstrations and an attack on Monday (October 18) in which he was half knocked to the ground. His visit is the first by a Soviet head of government, and is reported to be an important one for developing Soviet-Canadian relations. In May, Mr Trudeau visited Moscow, where he said that Canada might look to the Soviet Union as a way of lessening Canadian dependence on the U.S.A.

In one of several demonstrations later, Mr Kosygin was attacked and half knocked to the ground in the streets of Ottawa on Monday.
