Background: BRITISH ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS THIS WEEK WERE AIRLIFTED TO MERSING, IN JOHORE STATE, SOUTHEAST MALAYA. THEY WERE SENT TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS TAKING REFUGE ON SEVERAL NEARBY ISLANDS.

IT IS THE FIRST TIME THE COMMANDOS WERE USED ON MALAYAN SOIL AGAINST THE INDONESIANS. THEY SET UP CAMP ON A JUNGLE CLEARING AND USED HELICOPTERS TO GET INTO INACCESSIBLE AREAS.

THEY WERE CALLED IN FOLLOWING A REPORT BY A MALAY VILLAGER THAT HE HAD SEEN 10 HEAVILY-ARMED INDONESIANS IN THIS JUNGLE. THE COMMANDOS WERE ASSISTED BY MALAYSIAN TROOPS AND VILLAGE GUIDES.

MOST OF THESE ISLANDS HAVE THICK JUNGLE AND ARE SPARSELY INHABITED. BECAUSE OF THEIR ISOLATION, THEY MAKE A READY HIDING PLACE FOR ANYONE LANDING ON THEM. THE ISLANDS ARE CLOSE TO THE MAINLAND.

THE NORTH-EAST MONSOON IS DUE TO HIT THE MALAYAN EAST COAST IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS' TIME SO THE SEARCH CAN ONLY BE A RAPID ONE. A NUMBER OF INDONESIAN NAVAL BOATS HAVE BEEN SEEN JUST OFF TERRITORIAL WATERS AROUND SOME OF THESE ISLANDS OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS.

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), THE COMMANDOS CAPTURED ONE INDONESIAN WHILE SEARCHING IN THE ISLANDS.
