    A NEW VESSEL, THE CATAMARAN "LATES", HAS RECENTLY BEEN COMMISSIONED FOR RESEARCH WORK ON THE VOLTA LAKE IN GHANA. THE CATAMARAN WAS DONATED BY THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME AND COST MORE THAN SIXTY-THOUSAND NEW CEDIS.

    MR E. L. QUARTEY, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE VOLTA RIVER AUTHORITY, COMMISSIONED THE NEW VESSEL AT A CEREMONY AT AKOSOMBO ON MAY 2. ANOTHER SPEAKER WAS MR MARCEL LATOUR, THE RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME WHICH DONATED THE VESSEL. AMONG PROMINENT GUESTS WAS JOHN HARLLEY, CHAIRMAN OF THE VOLTA RIVER AUTHORITY AND VICE-CHAIRMAN OF GHANA'S RULING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL.

    "LATES" IS THE SCIENTIFIC NAME FOR THE NILE PERCH, THE BIGGEST SPECIES OF FISH IN THE VOLTA LAKE. THE BOAT, A TWIN-HULLED FISHING CANOE, PROVIDES HIGH STABILITY IN ROUGH WEATHER.
