Background: Manchester, England... Portugal beat Hungary three goals to one on July 13th in their group three World Cup game at Manchester's Old Trafford field.

Two forwards from Benefica, Jose Augusto and tall Jose Torres were the big guns in the Portuguese attack. 29 year old Augusto put the Portuguese eleven ahead after a little more than one minute of play when he headed in a corner kick. His second goal came in the 65th minute when the Hungarian goalkeeper Szentmihalayi let an easy chance bounce off his chest and Augusto once more headed the ball in Torres, the big center forward got the third goal with only a minute to play when he put in a header.

Hungary's only marker came from sharp-shooting Fernece Bene, 21. He scored when Portugal's goalkeeper, Cavalho dropped a ball.

The Hungarians played well, dominating most of the first and part of the second half, but Portugal's ball control and sharper attacks made the difference. Behind all the Portuguese moves was Eusebio, the brilliant Benefica forward, who played most of the game with a bandaged head after suffering a deep cut over his left eye following a collision with the Hungarian goal keeper. Eusebio, rated just after Brazil's Pele in the soccer world, made three brilliant solo runs in the first half and started scores of dangerous attacks with his fine passing.

Just under 30,000 fans saw Portugal's win, which probably will put them into the quarter finals behind favoured Brazil in group three. The match, according to observers, was marked by nervous goal keeping on both sides. It was felt that the first two Portuguese tallies were due to nervous handling by Antal Szentmihalayi and that Cavalho in the Portuguese nets gave away the Hungarian goal when he dropped the ball in front of Bene. Though Hungary featured excellent short passing and intelligent running, they were unable to translate them in terms of goals scored. Hungary's two scorers Bene and Albert missed several changes during the match. They will undoubtedly have to do better in their next match---against Brazil on Friday.

A crowd of nearly thirty-thousand attended the group three soccer match of the world Cup series between Portugal and Hungary at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester on July the thirteenth. The superior ball control and sharp attacking moves by Portugal brought them a three goals to one victory over the solid consistant tactics of the Hungarian team. The first goal was scored in the sixth minute when twenty-nine year-old Augusto headed in a corner for Portugal. Hungary almost levelled the score when the ball bounced off the cross-bar of the Portuguese goal, their only goal however, was scored by twenty-one year-old sharp-shooter, Fernece Bene, who hammered in the ball when it was dropped by Calvalho, the Portuguese goalkeeper.

Portugal's second gaol came in the sixty-fifth minute when Augusto, again using his head, netted the ball as it bounced off the chest of Szentmihalayi, the Hungarian goalkeeper.

There was added drama when the referee, Leo Callaghan was involved in an argument at the touchline. The trouble was soon smoothed over and the game continued. Portugal's third and final goal, yet another header, was scored by centre-forward Torres in the final minutes of the game.
