  • Description

THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE HAS CHOSEN SAPPORO CITY, ON THE NORTHERNMOST ISLAND OF JAPAN, AS THE SITE OF THE 1972 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES.

SAPPORO'S 704,000 PEOPLE WERE JUBILANT AT THE NEWS THAT THEIR CITY HAD BEEN CHOSEN FOR THE WINTER OLYMPICS. THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT PLANS TO ESTABLISH A NEW CABINET POST TO TAKE CHARGE OF OLYMPIC AFFAIRS, AND WILL PAY FOR BUILDING VARIOUS COMPETITION GROUNDS AND AN OLYMPIC VILLAGE THAT WILL HOUSE 1,500 COMPETITORS.

A SKI JUMP WITH SEATING FOR 50,000 PEOPLE WILL BE BUILT ON MOUNT OKURA IN THE NORTH OF SAPPORO, AND THE SKI SLOPES AND SLALOM COURSE ON MOUNT TEINE WILL BE EXPANDED AND IMPROVED.

SAPPORO WAS THE SCENE OF THE WORLD SKATING CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1954. IT IS ONLY ONE HOUR'S FLYING TIME FROM TOKYO, AND HAS FOR SOME TIME BEEN JAPAN'S TOP RESORT FOR WINTER SPORTS. AT THE NORTHERNMOST TIP OF THE JAPANESE ARCHIPELAGO, SAPPORO HAS A LONG WINTER - THE SNOW IS DEEP ENOUGH AND FIRM ENOUGH TO ALLOW SKIING WELL INTO APRIL.
