  • Description

The annual debate on the Middle East opened in the United Nations' General Assembly on Wednesday (29 November) on what was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the partitioning of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states.

Egypt urged the United Nations to warn Israel that unless it fulfilled its Charter obligations, it could face suspension and possible expulsion from the organisation.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed El-Zayyat also reminded members that the Security Council had the power, through economic sanctions and other coercive action, to "put an end to aggression and to establish peace by the force of law."
In reply to the Egyptian delegate's remarks, Israeli Ambassador Josef Tekoah reaffirmed his government's readiness to negotiate peace without any pre-conditions. And, he said, Israel was ready to engage in talks aimed at an accord for the reopening of the Suez Canal.
