Background: Queen Juliana and Prince Bernard of the Netherlands arrived in Mexico City on Wednesday for the start of their nine-day state visit to Mexico. They were accompanied by Crown Princess Beatrix. Princess Irene was also due to travel with them, but she withdrew shortly before the Royal party left from Amsterdam.
The visitors flew to the capital from Texas aboard a special plane provided by President Lopez Mateos. He was at the airport for the official welcome. With the President was his daughter Avecita, all the members of the Mexican cabinet, the heads of diplomatic missions, and members of Congress.
A 21-gun salute greeted the party at the airport, which had been specially decorated for the occasion. The visitors reviewed an honour guard of Mexican cadets. On a special grandstand were about 200 members of Mexico's Dutch community, most of them businessmen.
Bands playing Mexican tunes greeted the Dutch Royal party, which drove to the Presidential residence under showers of paper flowers. More than 300,000 people, many wearing Mexican national costume, cheered the party along the six-mile (9 klm) route from the airport.
