  • Description

NEGRO CHILDREN JOINED IN A DEMONSTRATION IN NEW YORK ON TUESDAY PROTESTING AGAINST ALLEGED JOB DISCRIMINATION.RECRUITED BY CIVIL-RIGHTS LEADERS, THE CHILDREN SAT DOWN IN FRONT OF VEHICLES TRYING TO BRING MATERIALS IN TO A BUILDING SITE AT THE DOWNSTATE MEDICAL CENTRE IN BROOKLYN.

POLICE MOVED IN TO MOVE THE CHILDREN: THEY PICKED THEM UP, PLACING THE GRINNING YOUNGSTERS IN CARS WHICH TOOK THEM TO A PRECINCT POLICE STATION.LATER, THE CHILDREN - 5 OF WHOM WERE UNDER 7 YEARS OF AGE - WERE RELEASED IN THE CARE OF RELATIVES.

THE NEGRO LEADER, THE REV.W.A.JONES, SAID LATER: "THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF A STEPPED-UP CAMPAIGN TO MAKE THE PUBLIC MORE AWARE OF OUR FIGHT.WE HAVE ENLISTED CHILDREN BECAUSE WE FEEL THEY HAVE A STAKE IN THIS STRUGGLE AND THE OUTCOME OF IT".

FOR THE FIRST TIME DEMONSTRATORS IN THE 20-DAY PICKET TRIED PHYSICALLY TO STOP CONSTRUCTION.SIX CLIMBED ON TO A TRAILER AND PREVENTED A CRANE FROM OPERATING, SO THAT POLICEMEN HAD TO PAY THEIR FINGERS LOOSE BEFORE CARRYING THEM AWAY.

THIS PARTICULAR ASPECT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS CAMPAIGN IS AIMED SPECIFICALLY AT THE FACT THAT AT THE MOMENT NOT EVEN 25% OF PUBLIC CONSTRUCTION WORK CREWS ARE NEGRO OR PUERTO RICAN.
