  • Description

Each year a so-called "world championship" salmon fishing competition is held on a river -- the Gave d'Oloron -- in the Basses Pyrenees, southern France.

In this year's "championship", which ends today, 5th April, 67 competitors, from five countries, are taking part, and Visnews cameras have been at the riverside to film them and their catches.

The water has been extremely cold this year because of the melting of unusually heavy snow in the mountains. The salmon have been reluctant to take the lures offered to them, and whom our cameramen were filming only about 15 fish had been caught. These salmon averaged about 23 lbs. each and they were taken in the 20 kilometres (12 1/2 miles) of river, between Navarrenx and Peyrhirade, allocated to the competitors.
