  • Description

The new Russian Ambassador to Cuba, Sergei Kudriavtsev presented his letters of credence to President Osvaldo Dorticos at the presidential palace, Havana, Cuba, Aug 22. He is the first Russian ambassador to Cuba since the Soviet Union severed relations 1952. K. Kudriavtsev also laid a wreath on the monument in Central Park to Jose Marti, revolutionary hero of the 1890's against Spanish rule.

Russian and Cuban flags flew side by side outside the presidential palace to mark the new link between the two countries. After the playing of the national anthems, some onlookers shouted "Long Live Khrushchev".

The Ambassador's wreath, in tribute to Cuba's revolutionaries, bore the Russian Hammer and Sickle at its centre. As the Ambassador left the monument, Cubans cheered and clapped him in salutation.
