A peaceful demonstration was held outside the American Library today. The demonstration by a few hundred members of the All India Students Congress was led by Mr. Shashi Bhushan, member of Parliament belonging to the Indian National Congress. The demonstrators were assembled to demand end to alleged CIA activities in India as also alleged propaganda carried out by the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe.
Mr. Shashi Bhushan addressed the small crowd. He later walked to the main entrance of the Library and presented the memorandum to a US representatives. The US officer assured the leaders of the demonstrators that US had nothing in its mind against India and that it was for all friendship With India. The demonstrators in return assured that the demonstration was not against US people, was not against USA as such and even the Memorandum made it clear that it mainly protested against the activities of secret agents etc. Everybody dispersed peacefully thereafter. The main street outside the American Library building continued to be busy with traffic as usual.
Nearly two years ago, In the early stages of the proclamation of the internal state of emergency by Mrs. Gandhi and assumption of far reaching dictatorial powers, her government had extreme problem trying to justify the step to the people. All the leaders of Opposition having been arrested there was genuine anger amongst people and soon after Mrs. Gandhi's government tried to create the bogey of foreign threats. Her party machine went into action and demonstrators were arranged outside the USIS calling upon USA to desist from meddling into India's internal and to withdraw CIA agents from India. One such demonstration was led by Mr. Sashi Bhushan a member of Parliament of the ruling Congress Party together with the youth wing President Mr. Adel.
