Background: INTRODUCTION: Argentina took a one-nil lead over Chile in the Davis Cup South American Zone tennis finals in Buenos Aires on Friday (18 March), when Ricardo Cano beat veteran Patricio Cornejo. In a second match Guillermo Vilas of Argentina was leading Jaime Fillol 8-6, 3-6, 6-2, 1-1 when play was stopped by poor light.

SYNOPSIS: The Cano-Cornejo match was the first singles event in the finals, and it was clear right from the start that it was going to be a close contest.

With the first set drawing to an end, Cano served and Cornejo failed to return. To the delight of the crowd Cano took the set eight-six.

The match extended to five sets and lasted three hours and 20 minutes before Cano defeated Cornejo 8-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-8, 6-2.

The second singles match, between Vilas and Fillol, began much the same as the first, with both men equally matched. But in spite of Fillol's fine efforts, Vilas managed to win the set 8-6. In the second set however, he wasn't quite as successful and was defeated 3-6.

But Fillol's good fortune didn't last long.

Vilas began to put on the pressure and wear down Fillol, and in the third set managed to take an easy six-two victory. But with both players ties at one-all at the start of the fourth set, play was suspended when the light failed.

The match was resumed on Saturday (19 march) and Vilas defeated Fillol with a final score of 8-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
