  • Description

THE BODIES OF THE TWO BRITISH SOLDIERS, BEHEADED AFTER BEING KILLED BY TRIBESMEN NEAR THE YEMEN BORDER, WERE BURIED WITH FULL MILITARY HONOURS IN ADEN'S MILITARY CEMETERY, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). AMONG BRITISH AND SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERAL ARMY REPRESENTATIVES AT THE FUNERAL, WERE THE SEVEN MEN WHO SURVIVED FROM THE ACTION IN WHICH THE TWO -- CAPTAIN ROBIN EDWARDS AND SAPPER (ENGINEER) JOHN WARBURTON -- LOST THEIR LIVES.

A MARINE GUARD OF HONOUR FIRED SALUTES OVER THE GRAVES, AND A BUGLER SOUNDED THE LAST POST AND REVEILLE. AMONG THE OFFICERS TO LAY WREATHES ON THE GRAVES WERE THE BRITISH COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF MIDDLE EAST, SIR CHARLES HARINGTON, AND THE BRITISH GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING MIDDLE EAST LAND FORCES, MAJOR-GENERAL JOHN CUBBON. * ANOTHER WREATH WAS LAID BY SGT. REGINALD LINGHAM, WHO TOOK OVER COMMAND OF THE PATROL AND LED HIS MEN TO SAFETY, AFTER CAPTAIN EDWARDS HAD BEEN KILLED.

THE HEADLESS BODIES WERE FOUND BY A SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERAL PATROL ON WEDNESDAY, NEAR THE WADI TAYM IN THE RADFAN MOUNTAINS, WHERE THEY WERE INVOLVED IN AN ACTION ON THE 30TH APRIL. THE BRITISH PATROL, DROPPED BEHIND ENEMY LINES ON APRIL 29 TO OBTAIN INTELLIGENCE OF ENEMY DISPOSITIONS, WAS ATTACKED BY TRIBESMEN THE FOLLOWING DAY.

    * (MAJOR-GENERAL CUBBON CAUSED CONSIDERABLE CONTROVERSY IN BRITAIN, WHEN HE ANNOUNCED A FORTNIGHT AGO THAT HE HAD 'RELIABLE INFORMATION' THAT THE HEADS OF THE TWO BRITISH SOLDIERS HAD BEEN EXHIBITED IN TAIZ, ONE OF THE YEMEN'S TWIN CAPITALS. THIS WAS DENIED BY BOTH THE YEMENI GOVERNMENT AND THE UNITED STATES ENVOY IN TAIZ.)
