  • Description

TWENTY-EIGHT POLICEMEN WERE INJURED AT THE NANTERRE CAMPUS OF PARIS UNIVERSITY YESTERDAY (MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2ND) IN THE MOST SERIOUS STUDENT-POLICE CLASH IN FRANCE THIS YEAR.

POLICE HURLED TEAR-GAS GRENADES AT THE STUDENTS WHO WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THEIR PRESENCE ON THEIR CAMPUS. THE POLICE WERE SENT IN LAST WEEK BY EDUCATION MINISTER OLIVIER GUICHARD TO STOP RECURRING CLASHES BETWEEN RIGHT AND LEFT-WING FACTIONS.

ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO OFFICIAL FIGURE ON THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS INJURED, THREE WERE KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL.

WINDOWS WERE SMASHED IN THE FACULTIES OF LAW AND LETTERS WHEN THE POLICE WERE CHASED OUT OF THE BUILDING UNDER A HAIL OF CHAIRS AND OTHER OFFICE FURNITURE.

THE NANTERRE CAMPUS WAS THE STARTING POINT OF THE 1968 STUDENT RIOTS WHICH ROCKED FRANCE. AS A RESULT, YESTERDAY'S VIOLENCE IS REGARDED BY THE GOVERNMENT AS MOST SERIOUS, AND A 24-HOUR POLICE GUARD IS BEING MAINTAINED AT THE CAMPUS GATES.
