  • Description

A three-day Pan-African Seminar of members of the Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International (PTTI) opened in Nairobi on Wednesday (25 July). Forty delegates from seventeen African countries attended.

They are here to discuss various questions concerning the welfare of workers in the PTTI -- the role of trade unions, retirement age and pension rights.

The Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (the major trade union confederation in Kenya), Denis Akumu, urged the meeting to set up a new committee to collaborate with the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in the field of workers' welfare.

The Regional Director of the East African Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, W.N. Gitau, also addressed the meeting. He said his Corporation would continue to uphold principles of human dignity in accordance with PTTI principles.

The Seminar is the third Pan-African meeting of the PTTI. In 1959 a similar conference was held in Nairobi which is remembered because of the walk-out by the British and other delegations following an address by the Chairman Peter Kibisu in which he condemned colonialism. Mr. Kibisu -- now Kenya's Assistant Minister for Labour -- also attended the seminar.
