  • Description

In 1960 Jordan had a population of one and three quarter millions.... and at that time about half were illiterate. In 1965 the government organised and sponsored a special campaign to combat illiteracy. People wishing to take advantage of the voluntary scheme sign-up at street booths, then go to one of the three hundred training centres for ten hours a week.

They are taught Mathematics, religion and the Arabic language. Classes are segregated into male, female and children. Jordan's Ministry of Education is co-operating in the scheme with the Arab League, service organisations UNESCO, and employers in the battle to stamp out illiteracy. No success figures are available, but after the latest eight month course more than half of the three thousand students passed their final examinations.
